Black and White Dragon

This is a pen and ink drawing that my mother made. I always love her pen and ink drawings because she does them anywhere at any time. I have always watched her sit down while she was on the phone or watching TV and just produce work in such an automatic way. Pieces like this are automatic. I believe she used some water and a brush with the ink as well to give it the effect that you see. One thing about her work is that it is always exciting and making you think about what else could possibly be in the picture. My nephew, Gio, has always had a fascination with the mythical creatures called dragons. I think this is where Esther really started to develop a portfolio of these images. I know she has done dragons in the past...but her more recent ones have taken off and become much more intricate. For those martial artists that view this page, the dragon has a whole additional set of ideas and images that come with it for us, since it is a central image in many martial arts systems and Asian cultures - Kenpo is no exception. Since I view the world through partially crafted Kenpo glasses, I enjoy the implications of this work because what it brings to my mind. I encourage others to view it with there own glasses to bring the most that they can to this work, because that is what it should be about. enjoy and feel free to write comments and questions. The new website will be up soon and you can see all this and more there...as well as purchase work, go through themed galleries, and communicate and discuss things.

Untitled 2 - Esther Brown

One of the things that my mother, Esther would do is just go from intuition. She paints and draws from what she sees in front of her on the paper. It is a response process. I know because this is how she taught me to do a lot of my work. When I look at a lot of her images, I see the influence she had growing up - she used to go fishing a lot as a child and she would see so many fish everywhere. As a result, she sees fish everywhere in her work.

As for color choice, shapes, etc., I cannot speak to those. I know her work is intuitive and she responds to what evolves on the paper. The rest could be related to how she feels and thinks that day. I believe that my mother's style has stayed fresh and unique all these years because she has remained true to herself. She branches out with new ideas when she feels like it, but her work is about an expression of her.

Enjoy.

New Art Posts for Esther Brown

This the first of the posts for Esther Brown, my mother, and her work. The work here will be displayed and I may offer some brief commentary, however I encourage people to view her art and take it for what they see in it. My mother is someone of few words when it comes to art. She draws and paints and does not feel a need to fill in with words - her work speaks for itself. I would classify her work as intuitive, expressionistic, and surreal. However, I know my mother wants people to simply make up their own mind and not be influenced by what she has to say about it. To paraphrase what she has taught me over the years when it comes to making art - "Just paint." Don't talk about it, don't philosophize, justify, or anything else. The work will speak for itself. With that, I leave you to enjoy and contemplate these first posts. If anyone has any inquiries regarding purchase or anything else, just email me and I will respond promptly. Thanks.
